Super Funk Fantasy At Jimmy Love's
When I first met Jennifer Gentile last November, she was an excellent waitress at Jimmy Love's in the Gaslamp Quarter, where I began going about once a month to see The Cubes. Every time I went there, Jennifer always recognized me and remembered that I had ordered Guinness on my previous visits. I snapped this shot of her late one night, as she was cleaning up. After I took it, she told me to be sure to let her know when it ran on the cover of Vogue magazine!
On the last Thursday of February, though, Jennifer told me that the following Saturday would be her final night working at the bar, as she was quitting the job and moving to Los Angeles to join a band called Super Funk Fantasy! It seems the band had been playing at Jimmy Love's on a regular basis, and somewhere along the way, Jennifer got up and sang with them a time or two. That led to them offering her a place in the group, and she took it!
Luckily, Super Funk Fantasy still plays Jimmy Love's several times a month, so I got to see Jennifer sing with them in March (when I shot this photo of the quintet). I caught two sets that night, and from the moment they began each set until the moment they ended each one, they never stopped playing for a second! The band played a ton of songs each time, all as one really big 45-minute medley! It was very impressive!
If you'd like to see Jennifer and Super Funk Fantasy for yourself, you'll have two chances this weekend, as they will be appearing from 9:45 p.m. until 1:30 a.m. on both Friday, July 2, and Saturday, July 3, at Jimmy Love's, which is at 5th and G.Posted at 11:43 AM in Music
