Annual GoGirlsMusicFest Benefits MusiCares

Jana LoseyThe 5th Annual GoGirlsMusicFest is a series of showcases that feature prominent local and regional independent women musicians in performances all across the country. Inspired by Madalyn Sklar and her GoGirlsMusic.com, the concerts benefit MusiCares. Here in San Diego, 27 singers and bands will appear at Humphrey’s Backstage Lounge on Shelter Island, split over two nights: Thursday, October 28, and Thursday, November 4.

Bridget BrigitteThis Thursday's show will be my chance to finally get a second look at Abigails Attic, a rocking quartet of women I caught for the first time on Memorial Day at a Bridget's Music Monday at Humphrey's. I took the picture above of their lead singer Jana Losey that night. I also shot this photo of Bridget Brigitte, the GoGirlsMusicFest's local organizer, and I'm looking forward to seeing Bridget and her band again tomorrow too. And I'll get my very first look at Mermaid’s Journey, a duo I heard about in July from their friend Angela DiCarlo.

Here's a message from Bridget about the shows:

GoGirlsMusic.com, founded in 1996 by Madalyn Sklar, is all about promoting and empowering indie women in music! The organization has dedicated itself to bringing together independent women musicians from around the country. Eight years later, GoGirlsMusic.com has become a welcome destination for women in music through networking and events. In the last five years, Sklar has spearheaded 50 GoGirlsMusicFest showcases benefiting various charities.

MusiCares, established in 1989 by the Recording Academy (the organization that presents the GRAMMY Awards each year), provides a safety net of critical assistance for music people in times of need. The services and resources of MusiCares cover a wide range of financial, medical and personal emergencies, and each case is treated with integrity and confidentiality. MusiCares also focuses the resources and attention of the music industry on human service issues that directly impact the health and welfare of the music community. Every day, MusiCares helps people we all know -- whether it's a young guitar player who is about to undergo surgery without health insurance; a veteran pianist whose hand injury will prevent him from performing for an extended period; the family of a beloved blues artist who cannot afford to pay for his funeral; or a songwriter who has found that substance abuse is consuming his life. MusiCares can and does help.
