Happy Birthday Daniel Valko!
Happy Birthday to Daniel Valko! I met Dan in 1974 when he was in the chorus of "The Music Man," the late Tom Rusch's first big Covenant Ark Theatre musical in San Diego. I did photography for CAT from 1974-80, and Dan stayed with the group even longer than I did. Over the years he played lead roles in a number of their shows, including Lazar Wolf in "Fiddler on the Roof," Bellamy in "The Fantasticks," Zoltan Karpathy in "My Fair Lady" (Dan is on the right in this 1979 photo I shot of him with Jim Morlino as Professor Henry Higgins), Ebenezer Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol," Pedro in "Man of LaMancha," and Jud Fry in "Oklahoma!" Dan still acts whenever he gets the chance, mostly with Lyric Opera San Diego and Christian Community Theater. When I last bumped into him at Schroeder's Club and Cabaret in June, he was in rehearsals to play Big Jule in CCT's production of "Guys and Dolls." A rather husky guy, Dan also puts on a kilt and throws the caber -- a large piece of wood that resembles a short telephone pole -- in various Scottish athletic events, including the San Diego Highland Games held every year in Vista!Posted at 6:40 AM in Birthdays, DMG's Friends, Theater
