Cathryn Beeks Offers "Listen Local" Site
Many of the articles posted here at ShyCloud.com feature my humble attempts to publicize the music of various San Diego singers and bands that I think are worthy of attention. KKSM radio's Joan Rubin, with her "Locals Live" program on Tuesdays, is on a similar mission.
This week on that show I learned about another woman who has done quite a bit to help San Diego artists, when Cathryn Beeks was Joan's guest. Cathryn runs a web site called "Listen Local." She also organizes 10-12 showcases a month under that banner. Here's a photo of (from left) Cathryn, Matt Silvia and Joan that I borrowed from the "Locals Live" web site. Matt, a member of The Cathryn Beeks Band, also was on the show.
Cathryn told Joan that "Listen Local" started with some open-mic nights she hosted to give newer, inexperienced bands and performers an opportunity to get exposure. She said she adopted the "Listen Local" name last year and also dropped the open-mic tag then, which allowed her to have bigger-name locals playing alongside the lesser-known acts.
The "Listen Local" showcases take place at several venues, including Brick by Brick's monthly "Acoustic Alliance," where four singer/songwriters share the stage in a storyteller format, trading the spotlight back and forth to each perform three of their original songs. Those events always feature three groups of four artists, so that's 12 singers and 36 songs per night! The next "Acoustic Alliance" will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 15.
Before that, however, from 7 p.m. until 1 a.m. on Thursday, February 10, the Coaster Saloon (across from Belmont Park) will host a CD release concert for "Listen Local - Volume One," a compilation that features 15 songs by some of San Diego's best performers. Many artists on the CD will play sets, including Steph Johnson, Simeon Flick, 21 Grams, Christian Knudsen, RDG, No Means Maybe, Deadline Friday, The Cathryn Beeks Band, Sven-Erik Seaholm, Sweet Tooth's Matt Silvia, and Tubby.
Both of the shows mentioned above are free, as are most "Listen Local" events, but donations will be accepted. Check the "Listen Local" calendar for a complete list of upcoming showcases.Posted at 10:02 AM in Music
