"West Side Story" In North Park

The Jets and Sharks will be rumbling again this weekend during "West Side Story," as the Saints Players of St. Augustine High School present a super-sized version of the classic musical from April 6-9 at the North Park Theatre, 2891 University Ave.

The play is being directed by St. Augustine's Theatre Arts Director, Joseph Bernens, an old friend of mine. Joe recently sent me an e-mail that said, "We have about 100 people involved, including some alumni and adults helping in the orchestra pit. The kids are doing a fantastic job at rehearsals. I think you will be impressed at what our kids can do! We hope to see you there."

In the show's program, Joe writes: "We had an enormous turnout for the auditions, the best ever for a Saints play. We had an interesting dilemma. 'West Side Story' normally can take a cast of between 25 and 40 members. We had 84 who wanted to partake in this special experience. What to do? Keep all of them! A seemingly daunting task; but why not? Musical theatre gives us the venue to include a great number of students in a play who would otherwise be left out. And so we bring you our rather large cast, in a play the students have been requesting ever since we brought back the musical four years ago."

Choreography is by Debbie Torgeson and music direction is by Cory Montano. The main cast includes Kevin Cullen, Amanda Gustafson, Brian Johnson, Jeremy Johnson, Brendan Kellams, Jorge Medrano, Nick Montano, Quinn Pendleton, Julianne Shelton, Corinna Sparhawk and Ashley Toles.

Curtain will be at 7 p.m. on April 6-7-8 and at 2 p.m. on April 9. Tickets are $13.50 for adults and $11.50 for students, and they may be purchased through the North Park Theatre. Call the box office at 619-239-8836 for more information. Tickets also are available online at www.e-ticketsnow.com.
