DMG Once Was A Guitar Star!!!
Because I spend so much time taking pictures of the local music scene, people are always asking me if I play an instrument myself.
No, I don't, but when I was in 7th and 8th grade I was taking guitar lessons and I was on my way to following in the footsteps of one of my idols back then, the late, great Ricky Nelson. Here I am with a flat-top haircut like Ricky had around that time.
My teacher was a man named David Yantis. He had a large group of students who all bought guitars (and amps) from him like the one in the picture. We were all part of a large band, and as a member of it I played at the Del Mar Fair when I was only 12 years old! I also led a 3-piece band during the St. Didacus Elementary School Talent Show, and was part of a 7-piece band that played for a Parents Night.
I had always loved sports more than music, though, and after arriving at St. Augustine High School I ventured off in that direction, by becoming the head manager and scorekeeper for our basketball, baseball and football teams, which meant I was always at practices or games.
That eventually led to me being invited to write about sports for the school paper, which caused me to major in Journalism at SDSU, which later resulted in me becoming a photographer.Posted at 10:13 AM in Music
