Celebrate DMG's Birthday, Part 2

As I wrote in my previous post, my birthday is December 24th. I will be celebrating it on Friday, December 21st, as I've already mentioned, and again on Saturday, December 22nd, at two events on Adams Avenue in Normal Heights. Both of the Saturday gigs will be around the corner from my old childhood elementary school, St. Didacus!

The first show will be a benefit at the Ould Sod for homeless veterans. Admission is free with your donation of one pair of new, warm men's socks. The 5:30-9:30 p.m. show will feature The Flimz, Saba and Sara Petite. All of them are excellent performers, but I've been mad about the sultry Saba for years, because she's one of the most constantly interesting people I know. I shot this picture of her at Lestat's in August.

And Lestat's will be my second Adams Avenue stop this Saturday night, as I plan to move over there by 10 p.m. to see Brenda Xu, a singer/songwriter I hadn't heard of until April of this year. Brenda rapidly became one of my favorite subjects, and in September we did a great photo shoot together at beautiful Torrey Pines, which included the shot above. Another picture from that morning appeared recently in the San Diego Reader. Isaac Cheong will perform first at 9 p.m., and The Flowerthief will have their CD release show after Brenda's set. There will be a cover charge for this event.
